Webtoon Wednesdays: BOO! It’s Sex Review

This comic was a collaboration between Monica Gallagher and Danielle Corsetto to create a proper sex ed comic for girls. I didn’t know what to expect when I started it, I just came across it while scrolling through the Webtoon app at midnight. By the time I forced myself to stop reading, I was 40 episodes in and had learned sooo much that I would have never found out any other way.

In this story, 4 girls move into a house near their college for their freshman year. It is an abandoned old sorority house, and they find some remnants of the girls who used to live there when they move in. One was an old tequila bottle that they open, and a ghost named Tara pops out! She was a sorority girl when she died, was happily sexually active, and is determined to help these four girls live their best SAFE lives in college.

I didn’t even know that this comic was supposed to be a sort of Sex Ed until I actually got into the series. I just thought that it had a unique title and wanted to see what it was about. Then, I started learning things that I had never known before, stuff that I wanted to send to my other friends who are in college. This comic should honestly be required reading for high schools and colleges, it teaches so much important information. Sex should not be a taboo topic as teens are likely to have sex with or without proper education, so it is more important that they are given the tools to make educated decisions. That is what this comic/proper sex education does, helps you make educated decisions about your body and your life.

This comic also has a unique and compelling story about the love lives of the individual girls. The girls all have different sexual orientations and levels of sexual activity, so Tara has to tailor her lessons to each of them individually. Their stories grow as the comic goes on, and Tara just keeps popping in as the helpful and friendly ghost.

I would definitely recommend this comic to anyone looking for good sex ed materials, or to anyone looking for a good story with amazing art. I hope that these authors get together to create another comic, whether educational or purely for entertainment.

Webtoon Wednesdays: Ghost Wife First Impressions

For the most part, I have only used Webtoon Wednesdays to review comics that I actually enjoy. I tend not to even pay attention to those that I don’t like, I just drop it and go to the next one. Ghost Wife is special. I haven’t liked ghost wife since I saw the art for the story, but I decided to give it a try for the heck of it. It kept getting recommended to me on the Featured page and I saw that a lot of people were reading it, so I assumed that it was going to be good. I assumed wrong.

So far I am 17 episodes in, and I don’t think I am going to go much further than that with this story. Let me start off by discussing the art style. I think that the art style could work for the creepy horror vibe, but this story is categorized as romance, as you can see in the banner. I was expecting at least some sweet art to sort of break up the horrific demons and monsters in the world, but the cutest thing that I have so far is a weird crocodile man thing. The MOUTHS on these characters are so gross. No one looks like they have any teeth except a few of the ghosts.

Look at this!! Like wtf. The mouths on all the human characters and then just THAT thing. I don’t think I can forgive the art style, I just can’t.

Then, there’s the story. The main character Liz is just sleeping in her room when she sees Damon eating cats?? And then he comes up to her room and is like “should I kill you or make you my wife”. Like what kind of question is that. Then, she starts seeing the Ghosts everywhere, so she just becomes his wife, and everyone around them simply accepts the fact that they are engaged and are in high school.

The story has the whole Frankenstein thing going but in a bad way. Damon doesn’t know how to be human, like at all, and so Liz is always trying to teach him things that he doesn’t know. There are even other ghosts that appear in the first 17 chapters that are able to express themselves more than our buddy Damon over here. I don’t know how the romance is supposed to happen if Damon doesn’t even seem to think in any sort of romantic terms.

At this point, 17 chapters in, there is nothing that is drawing me back to read more. I wouldn’t recommend this webtoon to anyone looking for a romance or a horror story, just read a different one.

Webtoon Wednesday: AMuslimMamaComics!

I love supporting amazing artists on Instagram. When I first started reading Asbah Alaena’s comics, I fell in love with the art style. Soon, I started following the story of herself and her family. Her name on Instagram is @amuslimmamacomics, and she writes about her everyday life raising children, being a wife, and being a Muslim woman.

I am not Muslim, so I didn’t know what to expect coming into it. Soon, I kept reading her older comics just to learn more about the religion and to understand my Muslims friends better. She writes about the peaceful, amazing, funny, and difficult parts of being a Muslim in today’s world. One of my favorite inspirational comics of hers was this one. I never really understood what Ramadan was truly about until I saw this comic, and it made me so happy to know that this was how my friends were going to be feeling for that month.

A lot of her comics are simply relatable if you have kids or have been around kids for any period of time. She discusses the good, bad, and the hilarious of being a mother. One of my favorite motherhood-related comics of hers is this one!

I would definitely recommend you check her out and read even more of her comics, she even writes about some political/social and humanitarian issues in comics such as this one!

I hope that you check her out and enjoy her comics as much as I did! Let me know who your favorite Instagram artists are in the comments!

Webtoon Wednesday: MadHattey!

This Webtoon Wednesday, I’m highlighting MadHattey from Instagram! She draws comics based on characters from the plays Dear Evan Hansen, Be More Chill, and writes unique stories for her own characters. Many of the characters she writes are LGBT+, and she explores who each character identifies as in different comic arcs. I love all the couples that she writes because they are all just so positive and supportive of each other! Even though I am always surprised by the new couples she creates, I always end up loving them in the end! She has even gender swapped a few of the couples she created, and I just…I loved it.

My personal favorite pairing is Timmy and Rich. Timmy is MadHattey’s own character, and he is autistic. Rich is a character from Be More Chill. He had the SQUIP and was the one who told Jeremy how to get one, and he burned down a house accidentally while trying to get rid of his SQUIP at the end of the play. They make the cutest couple, as Rich helps Timmy through his sensory overload issues and bad memories of his father and Timmy helps Rich through his post-fire PTSD. Here are two of my favorite comics of the couple!

A color version!

And here is my favorite gender swapped version of this couple.

Nevertheless, not everything she writes is romance. Some of the stories she writes are about family and issues that come with that. There are other characters in her universe that have stories about dealing with mental health issues, ADHD, abuse, homophobia, and many other things. Honestly, a lot of these comics can get pretty angsty, but I love angst so that’s no problem for me. If you aren’t into angst, there is plenty of fluff to go around. You won’t be bored!

If you like LGBT+ and neurodiverse webcomics or are a fan of the play Be More Chill, you should definitely follow MadHattey on Instagram. She comes out with new content on a very regular basis, sometimes almost daily! I am always excited to check and see what else has come out of her amazingly creative mind.

Webtoon Wednesday: No Scope First Impression / Review

I’ve read the first three episodes of the No Scope Webtoon. I’m not exactly sure what to make of it, but I am definitely interested in dedicating my time to read a few more episodes!

Image

The story is about a Korean kid named Suho who is amazing at this FPS game called No Scope. He sneaks away in the middle of school to play it in the computer lab, and meets this other mysterious Korean kid doing the same thing. This kid is a far lower level than he is, so Suho believes that he will easily beat the new kids in a few rounds. When he loses 0 to 10, he knows that there is something special about this kid named Doyoon. The more he learns about him, the more he wonders how Doyoon got to be so good at the game!  He doesn’t have a gaming computer, he was playing on laggy American servers and still managed to beat everyone, and he barely knows anything about the game. But Suho still trusts him and decides to enter the both of them into a gaming competition.

Image

Again, I’m not sure what to feel about this webtoon. I don’t even know if they are going to go with the route that Doyoon is somehow a natural gaming genius or he’s just a massive cheater. Will he even succeed in this gaming competition, who knows? I just have to wait until the next episode to find out.

Image

The one thing that I know I dislike in this Webtoon is the character Juri. She somehow has a big crush on Suho and will do anything to hang out with him, but he keeps blowing her off for Doyoon. She is literally the most popular girl in the school but she is remaining hung up on Suho, it doesn’t quite make sense to me. Many webtoons have this “annoying unwanted girlfriend” trope, and after reading quite a few of them, the trope gets kind of old. I hope that Juri finds someone who really likes her and stops nearly stalking Suho to hang out with him!

Overall, this webtoon seems interesting, but I am not sure if it is my favorite yet. I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a new Lit-RPG type of Webtoon to read.

Webtoon Wednesdays: Age Matters Webtoon Review

Image result for age matters webtoon

She’s a hopeless romantic who’s turning 30 – and is not super happy about it. He’s a reclusive billionaire who’s hired her to be his assistant – and he’s not too happy about that either. Together they rewrite the rules of friendship, love, work and the BEST way to clean someone’s apartment.

I have never, and I mean NEVER, read a Webtoon about a straight couple where the main female love interest was older than the male love interest. I have never read a book  where the main female love interest was older than the main male love interest, and their relationship wasn’t completely based around sex. This webtoon was so different.

Rose is 30, and she doesn’t know what she wants to do in life. She has seen many of her friends get married and have successful careers, but she hasn’t been able to stay and progress in a job since she graduated from college. She just works for a few months to a few years, and then has to move to the next one. After her relationship ends, she doesn’t want to have to return home to face her family, so she offers to housesit for a friend. The only catch is that she has to cook and clean for her friend’s boss who lives next door. Sort of a weird job, but it will keep her on her feet until she can find a different one.

When she meets Daniel, she doesn’t know what to think. They don’t instantly fall in love, but Rose takes care of him. He is a 21-year-old billionaire, but he is always busy and doesn’t bother to have any friends or even eat on a regular basis. Rose decides to become a sort of caregiver to him, and Daniel doesn’t know how to deal with this. No one ever really cared about HIM, they just cared about the rich CEO.

So far in the webtoon, or as far as I read at least, they aren’t together yet. It is a slow burn romance, so they are going to be friends for a while first and learn to trust each other before starting to date. Again, another thing I don’t see in romance novels with an older woman. I’m glad that this Webtoon is finally starting to paint these couples in a positive light! I know people who have been married for years where the woman was 5-10 years older than the man, and I know people that have been married for years where the man was 5-10 years older than the woman. It works both ways, but the media tends to portray the “older women” relationships as being some sort of sexual fantasy whereas the older men relationships are just normal. Both are perfectly fine, and people can find happiness together!

The only thing that I hope is that one of them breaks out of their shells soon. Cuz from what I’ve read, it seems more like Rose is just taking care of Daniel, and he is just trying to help her without getting involved too much. Rose seems like more of a big sister than a romantic interest, and I hope that the author makes this transition as smooth as possible.

The art is also beautiful and so smooth. I rarely see errors in spelling or grammar, and every drawing will just come to life off the page. My favorite part of the story was definitely when they went to karaoke. I won’t spoil anything, but it was hilarious!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a slow-burn Webtoon romance.
