Cress Review (The Lunar Chronicles Book #3)

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3)

Songs I listened to the most while reading this book:

To be honest, both of these songs made me realize how much I wish that I were a teen in the early 2000s instead of an elementary schooler. I missed out on going to the movies for all of Twilight, all of Harry Potter, and I missed out on the start of great bands such as Paramore. Hopefully soon some other book related movie series will come out that I can watch.

Cress has been aboard her satellite for all of her life. No one knows that she is there except for her mistress Sybil, and to pass time she has taught herself to code and hack. Her mistress knows of these skills, and has ordered her to track down Cinder and her accomplices. Cress has another plan up her sleeve, one that will hopefully allow her out of her miserable prison and to the Earth that she has only dreamed of.

Scarlet, Wolf, Cinder, Thorne, and Iko are still on the run, but now that Cinder is gaining more of her Lunar powers, she starts to plan to return to rescue Kai. First, she must rescue Cress from her satellite prison. However when the rescue goes wrong, Scarlet is taken by Cress’ mistress, Wolf is injured, Thorne is left on the crashing satellite with Cress, and Cinder only has an ex-guard and Iko to help her return safely to Earth. Now that the team has been separated, Cinder is not sure whether or not she will be able to save Kai before he marries Levana.

This book in the series was where I could honestly see the writing style change. I could follow the story more, and I felt that none of it was boring or slow. Meyer has truly improved since the beginning of the series, and I found myself speeding through this book like I had with Heartless earlier this year.

I enjoyed seeing Cinder grow from the more closed off and saddened orphan to being the proud leader she has been throughout this novel. Having the ex guard in the story gave an idea to what some of the people of Luna might be going through because of their dictator Levana. Scarlet has some very interesting things occurring in her parts of the story, but I will wait to discuss them since they are major spoilers. Cress grows from being the damsel in distress on her satellite to being the one having to embark on dangerous missions with Thorne.

The character I disliked the most in this story was Wolf. After Scarlet was captured, he shut down instead of fighting to return to her. Even when he could have been one of the most useful members of the team, he just gave up because she was missing. Not even that she was dead, she was captured. I know that they could say that Wolf was acting like a person who suffers from PTSD and is worried about someone he cares about, but I just think that it was irresponsible of him to give up on his team so much. However this is simply my opinion, and it did not take away from me enjoying the book.

Overall this has been my favorite book of the series so far, and I am looking forward to reading Stars Above and Winter, hopefully finishing both this week. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys action and adventure with a side of fairytale and romance.

Overall Rating: 5/5

  1. Love your “songs” feature! My books don’t usually merge with my music playlist but I think it’s a really cool idea. Also really glad to hear that you loved Cress! I didn’t continue the series after Cress but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    1. I started the songs when I found myself being able to focus on the words more when I played a certain song over and over. This book just fit paramore so well. And I’m glad you enjoyed Cress!
