Rose is a dhampir, or a human/vampire (Moroi). She is in charge of taking care of Lissa, a full royal Moroi, ever since they escaped the Vampire Academy two years prior. Their biggest worry is the Strigoi, a race of evil vampires who would kill Lissa. They have been doing pretty well on their own, Lissa occasionally drinking from Rose, and no particularly dangerous attacks. However, one day when Rose is weak after Lissa feeds, they are caught by the guardians of the academy.
Back at the academy, Lissa has to go back to her classes where she learns to harness her magic, and Rose has to go back to classes learning how to protect her Moroi in the future. The only one she wants to take care of is Lissa, as she has a special bond with her, but since she has basically skipped class for 2 years it is unlikely that they will be paired. But no one knows of Lissa’s true strength, and no one knows how dangerous she can truly be.
I loved this book. It covered a lot of things, from racial divisions, to slut shaming, to depression, to…just…everything. I wasn’t expecting to like it this much, and I definitely wasn’t expecting the world-building to be so good in the story. This has nothing to do with any of the other typical “teen vampire” stories, such as Vampire Diaries or Twilight. it is a story all of its own, and I commend the author for that. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to read a full story, in an alternate universe, full of romance and action, and without a cheesy typical teenage storyline.
