My Review
The quint is split on how to train Lera for the third trial, the hardest trial. Half of the quint wants to train Lera as little as possible so she isn’t hurt, and then protect her in the trial. The other half wants to train her like they would train any other fae to try to hone her magical powers and give her the ability to protect herself in the trial. No one gives Lera a choice in how she wants to be trained, but she doesn’t want to be a dead weight in the quint. Not only is she the youngest due to not being immortal, she is also the weakest due to lack of training. If they don’t pass this last trial, they will not be recognized as a proper quint. Due to her mortality, some still want to break them apart before the trial even happens. Nevertheless, the quint is determined to stay together and pass this trial.
Lera was very sheltered in this book. She kept saying that she wanted more “difficult” training, but she only thought that because her actual training was so basic. When the time came for her to actually get training, she was shocked, but she didn’t become a damsel in distress. She was determined to be as strong as the fae, and she wanted to even help them hone their powers through her.
River and Coal have very troubled pasts, and these new events have their pasts coming back to haunt them. The quints relationship strengthens as they have to share their emotional baggage to progress magically and improve their skills. Lera learns things about the boys that she had never known before, and they learn things about her too. The closer they are emotionally the easier it becomes for them to connect romantically.
I’m really excited for how long this series is becoming! Most of the reverse harem novels I have read so far have been fairly short. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is not satisfying if you are a person who enjoys reading books that are in longer series. This isn’t a trilogy, and from what can be seen, I’m not sure if it will end at book 4! If it does, that’s fine, but if it doesn’t, I will just be even more excited to read about Lera and the four men who love her. These books are not difficult to read as the plot is always smooth and there are no time skips. There are a few POV shifts when needed, but they really only pertain to whoever Lera is interacting with at the time. You won’t have a POV shift that will take you to a random character halfway across the fictional world. I just love how these stories are written, and I can’t wait to read the next book.
I would recommend this book to lovers of reverse harem novels or fantasy-romance novels.
