The Selection is ending, and Maxon must make a choice between America, Kriss, Elise, and Celeste to be his wife. America is almost sure that he will choose her, but she herself cannot decide whether she wants to be with Aspen or Maxon. More importantly, the Northern and Southern rebels are trying to attack the kingdoms to get rid of the castes. Or something.
Alright so you know this isn’t going to be good. I couldn’t understand a thing that was going on in this book. I dislike love triangles in general, and this one just kept breaking my heart. After a while, I didn’t think that America deserved either boy. She was playing them both when they could have each been happier with someone else. I just got tired of every other chapter being her going from one boy to the other for comfort, and hurting both in the process.
Now lets dissect the conflict. From my understanding, the Northerners were supposed to be the good rebels, and the Southerners were just thrown in there to attack the castle and stuff. But at the end of this book, neither group actually matters. Nothing changes in the kingdom, America just marries Maxon and the story ends. Well, the original story before the author extended it ended that is. So overall, it was just a random plot device to add conflict to the story, but the conflict really only made America and Maxon fight more often. So I am going to say that it was a plot device to make the love triangle go in circles more. Sure, it also gave America’s dad a special purpose by being a member of the Northern Rebels, but I still have no idea what they accomplished.
Finally, there’s the anti-climatic ending. Maxon gets shot and dies. Then Aspen decides to date America’s maid. I WAS SO HAPPY!! I was so excited that America did not get to have either man in the end, after everything I had been through reading about her love triangle for over 300 pages.
But then Maxon is alive, and he marries America. I was done by this point, I don’t even want to read the next 2 books of theseries, and this book literally HURLED me into a slump after I was done with it. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.
Overall Rating: 1/5 (Nice cover)
