I really had no idea what to expect when going into this dark fairytale retelling, and I was definitely surprised with where this story went. Definitely a unique read. Who would’ve thought that you could take a Brother’s Grimm story and make it into a dark tale about a polyamorous drug cult? Props to the author Nyla K, she really put her all into this twisted tale.
Adriel has been a part of the Principality for many years. His parents died when he was twelve but the others in the commune have taken care of him since. He loves feeling safe with the people he has known ever since he was a child, and he can’t see his life outside of the Principality’s boundaries. As he starts to mature, he questions his feelings for other people. He doesn’t know who he is attracted to and he’s fine with that until he sees something he isn’t supposed to. Now, he can’t stop lusting after the High Priest and his foster brother, which leads him on a journey to finding out the truth about the principality.
Let me start off my review by saying this. When this is advertised as a dark fairytale retelling, it is DARK. Trigger warnings for sexual assault, self-harm, suicide, child abuse, drug abuse, foster sibling relationships. I found that the dark topics made this fairytale retelling more interesting, but this is definitely not the book for everyone.
Adriel was my favorite character in this story. He had spent his whole life in this cult, he knew nothing of it. He couldn’t even imagine that life outside of the cult would be better than life in the Principality. When he starts to fall for the Head Priest, he is worried that his thoughts will have him removed from the only place that he has ever called home with the only way of living that he has ever known. Little does he know, his thoughts will not be shunned but will instead be the key to him learning the truth behind his existence and reaching the highest level of mental realization that a human could reach.
I did not rate this book because it made me fall in love with every single character. I did not rate this book because the story was just so beautiful that I wanted to read it over and over again. This is not really that kind of story. This is the story that is hauntingly dark and that sticks with you. I could see the romance between the characters, but I could see the pain that fueled that romance. This book got 4 stars from me because the author was able to create such intricate characters that truly brought this story to life. There were some characters in this book that I absolutely despised! Nevertheless, I respected the author for being able to create such a good character for me to hate. Some parts of the book made me want to put it down entirely, but those visceral reactions could only come about because of how strong the storytelling was here. This was…an experience. That’s for sure!
The only reason why this book didn’t receive 5 stars was that the pacing was a bit off in certain sections of the novel. I struggled a bit to get through those parts and to get back to the story that I was enjoying. These did not last for the whole book, so don’t let me turn you off from reading if this interests you!
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a dark thriller type of novel.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 books.
Meet Nyla K.
Indie author of Flipping Hot Fiction. I write big books and I cannot lie, *insert smirky face* of the taboo and forbidden romance variety.
I love reading all kinds of fiction, although I have a passion for the dirty, smutty, taboo, and almost any other kind of romantic, erotic, love story. My books are not for the faint of heart. Meaning that I’m still getting used to being able to look people in the eye after they tell me they’ve read my book. But it’s a work in progress.
I like my books sexy, funny, light-hearted, dramatic, relevant, and boundary-pushing… But mostly, I love them unique and well-written! Life’s too short to read the same story redone over and over. I also believe in having an open mind, when reading and just in life. I personally don’t have any reservations or hang-ups when reading “triggering” subjects. My books are a judgement-free zone!! 😀
The thing I love most about books is that they help us to escape from the stresses and turmoil of our lives, and hop into a different time/place/reality. Reading broadens our horizons and opens our minds. That’s what I set out to do with my writing. If even just one person enjoys my books, then I’ve done my job 🙂
