When I woke up to check twitter, I saw that Jonghyun was trending. At first, I thought that he had come out with something new, or that it was his appreciation day or something. However, I was crushed when I saw his fans tweeting that he had committed suicide.
I’ll admit, I did not keep up with Shinee as much as I could have. I would listen to their music occasionally, and I would sometimes watch their Korean SNL skits. I didn’t dislike them, in fact, they were one of my favorites. But more often than not I would spend my time watching other groups. Shinee will be 10 years old next year, and so I was simply looking forward to their amazing comeback. However, when I heard the news, I was still heartbroken. I realized how much I was going to miss him, and how Shinee would never be the same without him.
I hope that his passing will bring up an important topic in the Kpop industry. It is important for these companies not to overwork their stars, and for the fans to be kind to them. Without being able to talk to these stars like a normal person, there is no true way to know what he or she is going through. Many people always said that he looked happy on the cameras and that no one ever thought he would do something like this. If companies continue to push them unnecessarily, it will simply lead to more heartbreaking stories. Jonghyun most likely never received help, and simply felt like the weak link as he struggled daily with depression and the crazy schedules. I hope that this is a lesson so that no one else has to suffer as he did.
Rest in Peace Jonghyun, you will not be forgotten.
This is so terrible right?! I read about it and understand he had severe depression. In Korea there is a major taboo in discussing these feelings and so they just struggle along without getting help from professionals. ♥️😭 What a loss to the kpop industry for such a sad, sad reason…
I know, but I hope that they will start taking it more seriously now. If they are really cruel, at least they will be worried about the money they lose when their artist dies. If they have a heart, maybe they will actually want the best for their artists.
Actually I understand it’s NOT the company at all… it’s the fans! The fans don’t want to hear that their idols have emotional problems… they want them to STAY Stars… that’s why they can’t date while they are an idol… or at least until they reach a certain age. ♥️ The fandom is crazy in Asia… but I also find it pretty amazing as fandoms in America are considered nerdy!
Oh really? I didn’t even think of it that way, that’s even worse.
