A billionaire with a secret…

Can the truth lead to happily-ever-after?

In this Once Upon a Fairytale story, hardworking magazine editor Sage White’s just getting used to being in charge, so she’s alarmed to find sparks flying with her new assistant—the distractingly handsome Trey! Working together, they grow closer, but can their blossoming relationship survive when Sage learns that Trey is really Quentin Rousseau, seventh heir to the publishing empire—and her boss?

My Review

Sage is a strong main character who is doing her absolute best in order to escape the prison that her stepmother has tried to put her in. When she finally got into the publishing world, her stepmother used the links she had from her corrupt publishing company in order to blacklist Sage from every company. She finally got into QTR, but the company is on its last legs. Her mother is working overtime to make sure that the company will stay in the negative, and she’s not the only one that is working against her.

Quentin hates his father and wants to see his business go down. He worms his way into the company by disguising who he was and applying for a job, but when he arrives, he doesn’t see the old woman that he expected to be running the company. Instead, it’s a young woman who has captured his eye, who also happens to be his boss. Now he has to decide on whether to bring the company down like he initially planned for years, or to help Sage with her complicated life.

This book is unique in some ways, but it is also mainstream in others. Rather than the typical office romance with the male boss and the female secretary, the roles are completely switched. Also, there is the inclusion of the evil stepmother just to make it the fairy-tale retelling that it needed to be. I only wish that there had been seven dogs or puppies, just to have the seven dwarves.

Nevertheless, it is not free of the typical romance tropes. Quentin/Trey is described several times as “tall” with “mysterious dark eyes.” If I had a dollar every time I see a character described as having “mysterious dark eyes” in romance literature, I would be rich! I was a bit disappointed when I saw that it used these usual descriptions, but it did not affect my score because it didn’t really affect how I enjoyed the rest of the novel.

The plot was fast moving and told from the POV of Trey, Sage, and Sage’s stepmother Elsa. The POVs were not confusing even though it was not announced at the beginning of each chapter which character was speaking. The world-building was also unique, as I found myself enjoying the description of the gala, the chateau, and even the office. This novel definitely didn’t just focus on the romance and forget the rest of the story. Everything flowed smoothly, and I read the entire 250-page novel in about 70-80 minutes.

There were no editing or spelling errors, even though this was an advanced edition. There weren’t even any plot holes that hadn’t been wrapped up by the end of the novel! For a short book, everything was done in a nice and orderly fashion. I had nothing to complain about.
