Andreona has been trying to get back into her father’s favor ever since he exiled her. She’s managed to take nothing and set up a small fort with traps. Surely her father, the king of thieves, would accept her if she returns to him with a price. One day, when she’s about to give up home, the perfect prize stumbles right into her trap. Two men have to be worth SOMETHING to her father. Little does she know that these men may be more trouble than they are worth, especially the handsome Highlander Malcolm that Andreona begins to feel a connection with almost immediately.
Andreona was a character that it took me a little bit to warm up to. She had an admirable cause for wanting to capture these men, but she ignored literally everyone around her that was telling her it wasn’t a good idea! She was almost completely fine with potentially harming these strangers if it meant that the father that had never shown her affection in the past would accept her again. Once the book diverged from this main plot point, I was able to enjoy Andreona a lot more. She grew from this girl who would just do anything to satisfy her father to someone who truly had wants and desires of her own. By the end of the book, I felt that her characters was both relatable and enjoyable.
The romance between Malcolm and Andreona was sweet. There was quite a bit of back and forth and “will they won’t they” as neither wanted to hurt the other, but the chemistry couldn’t be denied. Malcolm had already had a person he loved violently taken from him, and he couldn’t stand to have that happen again. I was rooting for them the whole time and was also happy that the story wasn’t full of insta-love.
This book has a LOT of story lore content compared to some other romance novels. It was a bit difficult at times to keep up with who was who and what the main goal of the characters was, but someone who is looking for more historical fiction than just historical romance would definitely enjoy this. I felt at times that as soon as I understood who was who that another character would be thrown at me. By the time I got to the end of this short book, I knew who was who and understood the story. Just take your time with this book, reread sections if you need to, and you’ll be able to keep up with this fast-paced tale.
I hope that the side characters get a book of their own! Uracca and Finlay were both unique and had some chemistry of their own. Even if they don’t end up together, I want to learn more about both of them. I will definitely be reading more stories by this author to see more of this historical romance/Highlander universe!
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new historical adult romance novel.
