Heart of a Witch Review

What happens when a witch starts to fall for the son of a witch hunter? Victoria sees her sister murdered by witch hunters and her family is torn apart. She swears to get revenge on that hunter for her sister and chooses his eldest son, Elijah, to get close to. What better way to get revenge than to hurt one of the people the hunter wants to protect most?

What Victoria doesn’t know is that Elijah hates his father already. Being the son of a witch hunter is not fun and games, especially when your father has the tendency to beat the disobedience out of his children. Elijah’s main goal is to protect his brother but he gets distracted by Victoria, a new beacon of hope in his normally rather dismal life.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. As an older sister I felt Victoria’s pain as well as her need to get revenge for her family’s loss. You see her change and grow in this novel, especially as she starts to use dark magic more and more to fight for those she lost. Her romance with Elijah felt a little rushed at times but it overall felt genuine. I wasn’t sure if I always wanted them to be together but I knew that I wanted them to hopefully find happiness somehow by the end of the tale. Each character had experienced enough suffering and deserved a chance to simply be happy.

The main thing that irritated me was that the ending felt very….scripted? I’m not sure exactly how to describe it but I felt like some of the characters acted very out of character for that part of the story. I also didn’t like how much Elijah flipped back and forth in his opinion about his father. His father had made him and his brother’s life a living hell but Elijah still showed him mercy and kindness time and time again, even when he acted in a far crueler manner in other points in the story. I just wish he had put some more of the negative energy he had pent up towards the man who had hurt him and pushed his brother towards addiction. These two things did not ruin the story for me, so I would still recommend the tale!

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new adult fantasy series.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
