My Review

This has officially been the longest book that I have ever read on my phone! I opened the epub file and saw that the book was 1000 pages long, and my hopes immediately fell. I thought that I was going to completely burn out before I finished reading the story! Even though the book was this long, I read the entire thing in around 4-5 hours. This book was just that good! It drew me in and wouldn’t let me go.

Let’s start at the beginning of the story. Thais and Sosie are sisters who live with their father in the woods. Sosie had the Fever, and so she is blind. Even though Sosie is the older sister, Thais does end up babying her a lot in the story, because the journey does not leave her in a good space mentally. When their father is killed in the raid, Thais must make sure that the two of them stay safe. Unfortunately, Atticus’ men find them, and the two are taken to a new land where they will face unspeakable terrors. Sosie is taken to the brothel, and Thais is supposed to be a wife of a soldier.

This is really when the story picks up the pace, as it is when Atticus comes into play. He is the soldier that is currently acting as the Overseer in the absence of the usual man. At first, we don’t see anything from his point of view, but then a tragic event occurs, and we start to see more interaction between Atticus and Thais. At first, I didn’t see how they were going to become attracted to each other. I saw barely any chemistry between them. Nevertheless, they didn’t disappoint, and I was completely rooting for them by the end of the story.

One thing that I wanted to point out in this story was that consent was definitely a big factor of any of the interactions that Atticus had with Thais. Atticus didn’t even want to be the first one to kiss Thais. This is something that I often see forgotten in YA or NA literature, so it was nice to see Atticus being such a gentleman.

The one thing that kinda took me out of the “fantasy” of the story was the fact that Atticus seemed to be Superman in so many scenes. His feet could be like blistered open, he could have cracked ribs and broken fingers, and his eyes could have been swollen shut, but he would still be able to magically wake up and save Thais, or able to still keep walking for miles and miles. I know that fantasy is SUPPOSED to be fake, but when Thais can barely handle a twisted ankle and Atticus can walk for miles with broken ribs and half the teeth knocked out of his mouth, it just seems fake.

This book has to be one of the most emotional books that I have read in a while. Rarely does a book ever make me cry, but I was literally crying at one specific part of the story. I won’t say what it is because it is a major spoiler, but it was closer to the end and when I read it I felt like I had been hit over the head with a shovel or something. I was just so shocked and saddened.

My absolute favorite part of the story was when Thais and Atticus had a space to rest for a little while when they were on the run, and they started acting almost like an old married couple. Either that or like newlyweds. I was able to forget the turmoil of their world and just focus on their relationship blossoming.

Even though this book was long, there was never a point where I felt like asking when it was going to end. I was entertained throughout the entire story, and the plot pacing was perfect. I wasn’t bored for a second and even when people asked me to do other things, I asked them to wait until I had finished the book. The last 30% actually felt like the longest part of the book but the middle which is usually when I start to get tired felt like the most lively part of the story.

The setting was unique. In this world, there had been a fairly recent “Fall” where all electrical things stopped working and Nuclear power plants basically melted down. Then there was the Fever, which killed many people. There are survivors, but many parts of the former US has been taken over by rebel groups, and those groups are killing people left and right.

I could go on and on about the little parts of the story that just make it so unique, but I just suggest that you read it yourself. I hope that this gets made into a good movie someday!

I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a new dystopian NA novel to read with an amazing romance and immersive storytelling.
