James, Lauren, and Dana go on a mission to infiltrate a cult’s headquarters. This cult, called the Survivors, has been active for years. In Australia they have an expensive hi-tech base called the Ark, where they will go if the world ends. They also have a boarding school, along with several other bases throughout the world. They were usually left to their own devices, but now they might be doing deals with a terrorist organization called “Help Earth” that is determined to wipe out anyone who doesn’t conform to their ideals of veganism and environmental protection.
James thought that this mission would be somewhat simple. All he had to do was talk to some crazy kids, and get himself into the organization. But soon, even he starts feeling the pull to actually join the organization, forgetting the mission, and he realizes that this may just be his hardest mission ever.
This was my absolute favorite Cherub book yet. All of the characters seemed to grow up a bit in this book, and only in a few occasions did James seem like a college student trapped in a 13 year old’s body. There was no “mission girlfriends” and only a little bit of underage drinking. Great improvement!
I also enjoyed the difficulty of this mission. It showed how cults can really get into someone’s head, even if they are trying their hardest not to conform, and turn them into someone willing to kill. The mission was mind-breaking, especially in the boarding school, but it showed the true resilience of the characters. I read the entire book in one sitting, and am planning to move onto the next one as soon as I can check it out.
