At Love’s Command Review (Hanger’s Horsemen #1)

I don’t read many cowboy romances, but when I heard that this one was published by Bethany House, I knew that I wanted to try it out. I usually enjoy many books published by this company, and I wanted to step out of my usual romance comfort zone. I am so happy that I did so, as this book was such a pleasant read.

Matthew was an ex-military man who belongs to a group of mercenaries called the Horsemen. They all disagreed with some of the actions of the military, specifically in trying to control/oppress Native Americans on reservations, and they decided to use their skills to help innocent people living in the countryside instead. When one of the Horsemen gets shot, Matthew is introduced to female doctor Josephine. Dr. Josephine is a talented, smart, and hardworking woman who is not looking for love. That is until she meets Matthew and can’t keep her mind off of him. When she is in dire need of help for her own family, she knows who to go to.

This heartwarming romance was a calming read. Josephine and Matthew fell for each other quickly, but both were addicted to their work and thus unwilling to act on a crush. The characters have chemistry and match each other’s energy from the beginning of the novel to the end. Josephine and Matthew are equally stubborn, but not in an annoying way. I hate when characters constantly put themselves in danger because they are stubborn. While Josephine and Matthew would want to be in danger to save each other, they both know their limits and use their brains to get out of tough situations rather than being solely ruled by emotions.

This book is also action-packed, as all cowboy romances should be. It isn’t that graphic, but there are a few medical scenes and shooting scenes that can be a tiny bit bloody/gory. I like that the author doesn’t dance around the fact that these characters are in the 1800s. There is no quick or easy way to patch up a bullet wound, especially without modern tools. It can even be a struggle to worry about infection without the advances of modern medicine at that time.

I truly did not have any complaints about this book, it was a lovely, clean historical fiction cowboy romance. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a book in this genre.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 books.
