When I read the title, I thought that this was going to be a book about a couple when the girl gets pregnant unexpectedly around Christmastime. This would have been a very boring storyline, as I could just guess it from the title. The book surprised me by not going in this more stereotypical storyline.
Instead, Flint becomes a single father over the course of 24 hours. His mother dies in childbirth at the prison she was incarcerated in, and now he is a thirty-year-old businessman taking care of a two-day-old child. He’s looking up Youtube videos and reputable internet articles on childcare so that he can be the perfect caregiver for his sister Diamond Rose, but he doesn’t know how he will be able to balance taking care of a baby and doing his job. Then, he meets Tamara, and a new wrench is thrown in his life.
Tamara has never been able to have a child, and her last miscarriage has left her absolutely broken emotionally. She doesn’t want to be around or even hold children. Then, her father asks her to investigate who is siphoning money out of his company, and she meets Flint, the prime suspect. Her father doesn’t trust Flint because of the lawsuit he was in because of his mother. She instantly is attracted to Flint, but she wants to keep her distance because of the investigation and the baby. But Flint might make it very hard to keep away from him, and Tamara desperately wants to heal.
I have to say that this book was absolutely perfect for me until the end. At the end of the book, it is like all of a sudden the book just couldn’t be too far over 200 pages, so everything had to be wrapped up IMMEDIATELY. I didn’t see a coherent plot anymore, Christmas was just thrown in at the end almost as if it was “OH by the way all these events happened at Christmastime now look at the TREE ok bye!” There were a bunch of investigations, and they were all wrapped up in a very rushed manner in the last 30-40 pages of the book. And then, almost as a cherry on top, Tamara bursts out with the “I love you Flint!” and they end happily ever after. I was so, so disappointed. Everything had been leading up to a great finale, and then it just fell so flat.
Overall, this short Christmas novel was definitely not Christmasy enough for me. I will give this book 3/5 stars because I did love the beginning, but I am sad that it couldn’t be a full 5/5 stars for me. If it hadn’t tried to masquerade as a Christmas novel when it really wasn’t and had fleshed out the end more without rushing everything with a bunch of time skips, it would have been perfect. But the ending ruined an amazing book for me.
