Blurb

In a land ravaged by war and haunted by fire-breathing silverbirds, Kosha is the last thread in a bloodline unraveled by violence. His father was a man who believed in wisdom over weapons, his mother a woman who fought for a future that would never come, and his brother a boy who disappeared into the mountains, chasing a cause that would devour him whole. Now, Kosha walks alone, armed with nothing but a bow and the impossible weight of revenge pressing against his ribs.

As Kosha crosses the wasteland toward the land of the silverbirds, he carries more than his grief—he carries the ghosts of his father’s wisdom, his mother’s defiance, and his brother’s sins. He carries the weight of every choice that led him to this moment. And with each step, he must. Is he the last survivor of his family’s story, or its final casualty?

A harrowing, lyrical journey through war, loss, and the brutal choices that shape a legacy, this novel asks what it means to inherit a fight—and whether a boy with nothing left to lose can change the course of his own history.

How does trauma stretch across generations, slowly creeping down the line from grandparents to parents to children? Kosha is a boy who has grown up in the time of the silverbirds. These gigantic fire-breathing birds destroy families, kill individuals, and leave people living in constant fear. But he is still just a boy, trying to enjoy life when the silverbirds aren’t around. He lives in the shadow of his older brother Isah. A boy he never had the chance to meet, a boy who left home before he was born. He’s supposed to have an older brother looking out for him and teaching him how to go through life, but instead he has a name that isn’t supposed to be spoken in the house. A name that makes his mother cry, and his father angry. When Kosha’s family is taken from him by the silverbirds, Kosha is determined to avenge them himself.

As you go through this book, you also read chapters from the perspectives of Kamal and Ara, Kosha’s parents. What did they go through as children before they themselves became parents? What were their parents like? What were their lives like? Did they know a time before the silverbirds, unlike Kosha?

This book has been one of the most impactful stories that I’ve had the honor of reading this year. I mourned for Kosha and followed his journey, trying to avenge his family from these horrific creatures. I learned and connected with younger versions of Kosha’s parents as I began to understand more of their world. Ara has to be one of my favorite female protagonists of all time. Her determination to read and gain an education was inspiring. As you read, you learn how things became as dark as they were by the time Kosha was born. You start this book being thrown into a fantasy world, only to realize just how human these characters are.

The story is gory, dark, and full of dread. Yet, it is also full of hopefulness. I was hopeful for Ara and Kamal as they both faced their struggles in young adulthood. I wanted them to succeed, even though by that point I knew what their final fates would be from Kosha’s tale. I tried to find out more about how the threads of this family were expertly woven into Kosha’s character and story. This book truly makes you think about how the decisions made so many years ago directly affect the present. How do people become the final versions of themselves?

By the time I reached the end of this book, my jaw was on the floor. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an emotionally impactful story that discusses generational trauma, survival, and how communities change over time.

I received a copy of this book, and this is my voluntary, unbiased review.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 books.
